G. Ph. Telemann - Ouvertüre C-Dur „Waßer-Ouverture“, „Hamburger Ebb und Fluth“
J. S. Bach - Ouvertüre D-Dur (Frühfassung, BWV 1069a)
G. F. Händel - Wassermusik-Suite (aus den Suiten HWV 348 und 350)
All the compositions in this concert have one thing in common: they are “overtures”. Most of them were written for important social occasions, just as Händel’s “Water Music” suite was specially composed for King George’s pleasure cruises. Telemann’s Water Music Overture, also known as “Hamburger Ebb und Fluth”, was also written for a representative occasion – the centenary anniversary of the Hamburg Admiralty Council. Bach’s Orchestral Suite no. 4 in D major BWV 1069 was subsequently extended to include trumpet and timpani parts. Brass instruments did not feature in the original version, which is being performed at this concert. This, in turn, produces sophisticated and, at the same time, intimate court music.
