The Grand Dukedom of Luxembourg is an interface between the Romanic and the Germanic cultural area. It borders on France, Belgium as well as the German States of Rhineland Palatinate and Saarland. It is the second smallest country in the European Union, with an expanse of 2586 sq. kilometers.
The country’s capitol, named after the country of Luxembourg itself, is the seat for the government, the archbishop, numerous university faculties, the international airport as well as the European institutions. Not least of which makes Luxembourg - next to Brussels and Strasbourg - one of the capitols of Europe.
The country of Luxembourg with a population of 484,000 is a crossroad for culture as well as melting pot and a real example of European culture and integration: Portuguese, French, Belgian, Italian and German people are here just as much as the English. With 25 different nationalities you can meet the whole world in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg was able to quickly make the jump to being a service and knowledge society besides its renowned steel industry in the south of the country. In 1994 UNESCO declared the entire old town of Luxembourg as World Heritage Site. In addition this, Luxembourg was named cultural capital of Europe in 1995 and 2007.
